How Can Your Team Better Your Safety Record?

One of your goals as an employer should be to focus on improving your company’s safety record.  Making sure your employees stay safe allows you to keep productivity and morale high and to avoid forever changing the lives of your workers. It also helps to ensure your company does not become liable for a workers’ compensation claim or end up with a citation from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The good news is there are a few simple things you can do to make your work site a much safer place. You should:

  • Invest in appropriate personal protective gear: You need to make sure that staff members have the equipment they need to stay safe. This will vary by industry, but find out what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires or recommends for people in your profession. Make sure there is enough equipment, that it is in good working order, and that your employees know how to use it.
  • Provide training to all employees, including temporary workers: Every employee needs to know how to use personal protective equipment. Every worker also needs to know what the biggest risks in the workplace are, how equipment works and how they can reduce hazards.  You should provide training on safety issues to every staff member who walks through the door, even if the training is brief because the worker will only be at the company for a day.
  • Make someone accountable for creating a safe work site and following safety protocols: Safety is everyone’s responsibility, but if you don’t hold someone accountable for making sure safety protocols are met and processes are followed, important safety initiatives may fall by the wayside. Designate a specific person to oversee work site safety so you can ensure there is someone who will take charge and can be held responsible if things go wrong.

You also need to make sure you hire staff members who take safety seriously.
