How to Prepare for an Interview

Your interview performance is going to be the key factor that determines if you will earn an offer when applying for a job. Once you have moved forward in the application process to get a chance to show off your skills in the interview, wow the hiring manager so the company will be eager to bring you on board.

Excelling in an interview simply requires that you take the right steps to prepare. The steps you should take include:

  • Researching the company. The more you know about the company, the clearer it will be to the hiring manager you care enough about the job to do your due diligence. When you learn about the company, it will also become clearer how you can add value and why your skills will be a good fit. Use the internet to find out about the company’s mission and operations, and use websites that allow you to get feedback on the company from current employees so you can learn more about the corporate culture.
  • Preparing answers to common interview questions. Be ready to answer some of the more difficult interview questions candidates are commonly faced with, such as questions about your weaknesses and queries about how you solved problems at your past job. You may also be asked why you want to work for the company and why you’re leaving your old position.
  • Practicing with a friend or on video (or both). There are lots of things that can make a difference in an interview, including your body language and the tone and speed of your words. Film yourself doing a practice interview or ask a friend or family member to do a practice interview with you so you can get feedback about how you are coming across. You can then make tweaks as needed to appear more confident and professional.
