How to Prepare for Being the New Hire

When you land a new job, you’ll probably be nervous about your first day as the new hire. You want to hit the ground running and impress your boss from day one, but you may be uncertain of exactly what to do when you start at the company.

The good news is, being a great new hire that companies dream of does not have to be hard. You can excel at your new job from your very first day by:

  • Asking questions. It’s important you learn what is expected of you, and the best way to do that is to ask. When you’re given an assignment, provided with training or shown how to use office equipment, think about any uncertainties that could arise and ask questions. Your boss and co-workers will usually be happy to provide you with more information, and you can take careful notes to remember all that you learned.
  • Paying careful attention to company culture. You want to fit in with your co-workers, which means watch for cues about company culture. Pay attention to whether everyone eats lunch together or at their desks, and watch whether your co-workers communicate regularly with an open-door policy or work more independently and schedule formal meetings for collaboration. By paying attention to what others are doing, you can make sure your own workplace behavior is appropriate.
  • Being friendly and approachable to everyone you meet. You want to make a good impression on everyone you meet, from the receptionist to your peers to people in other departments. Say hello to everyone, remember as many names as you can and be sure you are approachable and eager to meet your new co-workers.
  • Always maintaining a professional demeanor. While you want to fit in, you also don’t want to get involved in sharing office gossip or get too personal about your life on day one.  Be friendly, but stay professional as you do it so you don’t risk making a bad first impression.
