If you’re involved in a job search, it may seem tempting to apply to every open position that comes across your radar – especially if you are eager to get back to work. Unfortunately, if you’re just submitting a bunch of applications without a plan, you are not using your capabilities to their fullest potential, and you could be hurting your job search efforts.
Applying to every job you see, even if you aren’t really interested, is a waste of time for several reasons. You should avoid applying for positions you aren’t truly interested in because:
- It will save you time in the short term: Applying, preparing a resume and going through the interview process are all very time-consuming endeavors. While it’s worth making the effort to polish up your paperwork and talk to hiring managers for jobs you are interested in, these activities are nothing but time-wasters if you’re spending hours submitting applications and attending interviews for jobs you’d decline if an offer was extended.
- It will save you time in the long term: If you’ve applied to a company you aren’t really interested in working for, you could find yourself having to cope with calls from the hiring manager. If you go in for an interview at a company you won’t work for, you’ll likely end up with follow-up contacts. The time spent dealing with the hiring manager is time you could be putting to better use.
- It will allow you to devote more time to opportunities that matter: You have a finite amount of time to devote to your job search. If you waste some of that time applying for a job you don’t want, that leaves you with fewer hours in your day to research positions or to polish up your resume and cover letter to submit to a company you’re excited about.
