What Objections Does an Interviewer Have to Hiring You?

When you’re applying for a job, you want to come across as the best candidate. Unfortunately, when you apply for a job, you may not have every skill or trait that the company is looking for. If you have shortcomings, this could make an interviewer hesitant to hire you — and it’s important to overcome objections if you want to land the job.

While this may be easier said than done, there are a few key things that you can do to make sure you are responding appropriately to the reasons why an interviewer might be reluctant to bring you on board:

  • Ask the interviewer: When you are given a chance to ask questions at the end of the interview, consider asking the interviewer directly if they have any reservations about your application or if there is any reason they wouldn’t hire you. By finding out what concerns the interviewer has, you can address the objections head on. You may be able to clear up misunderstandings or put the interviewer’s mind at ease and improve your chances.
  • Look for weaknesses in your resume: You should also consider where you might fall short. Compare your resume and background to the job ad. Are there any skills the job requires that you don’t have or any areas where you fall short? If so, look for ways to provide concrete examples in the interview showing why you can succeed anyway.
  • Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes: If you were hiring someone for the job, what would be your biggest concerns about whether the candidate was qualified. Try to address those issues, and when answering questions during the interview, show you have what it takes to succeed.

If you can overcome the interviewer’s reservations, you can significantly increase your chances of being hired. Of course, you need to land an interview in the first place. SmartTalent can help.
